Tail Between His Legs, Part 02
“Run! Run!” Peter took off, running on all fours, the splash of river water hitting his heels and the roar of crocodiles ringing in his ears. “Come, on! Come on!” he laughed. “We made it!” “We done made it!” screamed Ham. “We made it,” Oop giggled. “We bloody made it!” Chim squealed. They found a tall tree and immediately scampered up the top. Peter was slow, but he gripped the trunk with his hands and feet and made his way to the top. “Hey, Pete!” Ham laughed. “You better climb a mite faster, otherwise, you’re gonna be crocodile chow.” “He’s gaining on ya!” laughed Oop. “Take your time,” Chim giggled. “He’s only got about five dozen teeth.” Peter climbed up onto the branch and looked down. There were crocodiles on the ground, peering up at him with their dark, beady eyes. They hissed as they reached the base of the tree, unable to climb it thanks to their short, stubby legs. They hissed a little bit longer as they circled the trunk, daring the monkeys to come back down, but

“Remember, everyone” the Orca lady said. “You don’t need to tell us how you transformed if you don’t want to. Just remember that we’ve all been through the same thing. All of us have had our lives changed in a very traumatic, sometimes very public way,” she said, adjusting her weight in her flimsy folding chair. “However, a good way to get rid of the shame and embarrassment is to speak your trauma out loud. It may be painful, but when I did it, I felt a lot better.” The kangaroo raised her paw. The Orca lady squinted to see her name tag. “Yes, Kelsey, thank you for volunteering.” The kangeroo swallowed as she stood up. She had turned down a chair, afraid that her buttocks wouldn’t fit, or worse, that the chair would break. After sitting on the floor, standing felt rather good, but she noticed the basketball hoop on the other side of the gymnasium. The rim was at eye level. “Uh...” “It’s alright,” the Orca lady said. “Take your time, Kelsey.” The ostrich nodded. So did the

“Hello?” “Liz? This is Miss O’Connell, are you at work yet?” “Uh, no,” Elizabeth said, holding a car over her head with both hands. “But I promise I’m almost there. The traffic on the thruway...” She pushed back the other car hanging over the edge of the overpass with her leg. The crumbling bits of highway barrier were about to fall onto the road below, but Elizabeth kicked the soccer ball sized chunks onto the median so no one would get hurt. “It’s kind of a disaster.” “I don’t care how late you are, kid. Just listen up. I’m going uptown to investigate the Swimmington kidnapping.” Elizabeth put the car down. “You’ve got a lead? What’s the scoop?” “I’m visiting a clinic where Swimmington went before she disappeared, but that’s not important right now. While I’m gone I need you to take the dress on my desk to the dry cleaning place down the block. Tell them it’s a rush job and pick it up this afternoon.” “Yes ma’am, but I still have to take care of the files—“ “I also need you

“Where are you going?” Raven demanded. “I’m going out with Superboy, of course,” Damian said. “I told you this before.” “Oh, no you’re not,” Raven said. “We’re going to finish this...now.” “Good: it’s finished.” Damian put on his cape and pulled down his mask over his eyes. “I’ll see you later, Raven.” “Damian!” Damian strode out of Titan’s tower. He didn’t hear Raven following him, but he could hear her seethe. He heard the crackle of dark energy—the same crackle Raven made when she was casting a spell. I’m sure she won’t blast me, he thought. Still, he was ready to run if she did. Don’t worry, Damian. You don’t have to do everything that girl tells you to do. You’re you own man. You’re the son of the Batman. You’re the grandson of the Demon’s Head. You can walk out of here whenever you want to. Damian waited outside the tower for a few moments, not looking back. Jonathan arrived a few minutes later. “Hey, Damian! How’s it going—“ “No questions. Just fly.” “Fly? I just
